While your planner oversees the full orchestration of events, your photo timeline is a refined, photography-specific guide that ensures every meaningful moment is documented with purpose. It doesn’t replace a planner’s timeline - it supports it. Why the Photo Timeline Matters
At its core, the photo timeline is built around one essential element: light. Photography is shaped entirely by light, so the very first place I begin, long before considering ceremony times or travel, is the sunset. This becomes the anchor of your entire photography experience. By working backward from sunset, I map out how long we have for portraits, when golden hour will fall, how lighting will shift throughout the day, and where specific portraits should take place. Whether you’re planning a summer ceremony with late light or a winter celebration with an early sunset, beginning with the sun ensures your imagery feels soft, intentional, and elegantly lit.
A thoughtfully structured timeline does more than organize your day, it also creates space. How the Timeline is Created
About three months before your wedding, you’ll receive your photography questionnaire. This is where the timeline begins to take shape. The questionnaire is comprehensive by design; it covers everything from venue access times, to ceremony flow, to family dynamics, to personal preferences, to logistics and travel details. These answers give me the full picture I need in order to structure your photography experience thoughtfully and accurately.
Once your completed questionnaire is submitted, I begin building your photo timeline. This process typically takes one to two weeks, depending on the number of events included in your coverage, the complexity of your family structure, and the specificity of your details. Occasionally, I may need to reach out with follow-up questions, and gathering those answers can extend the timeline slightly, but only in ways that ensure the final version is precise and tailored to your wedding.
Even though the questionnaire is sent out three months in advance, you are always welcome to share details sooner. If you know your ceremony time, travel plans, or venue access hours earlier than that, feel free to send them my way at any point. The more information I have and the earlier I have it the stronger and more refined your timeline becomes.
How the Photo Timeline Differs From a Planner's Timeline
Your planner’s timeline and your photo timeline serve two different purposes, but they work together seamlessly. Your planner coordinates the full scope of the day: vendor arrivals, hair and makeup, transportation, décor setup, dinner service, and everything in between. My timeline focuses exclusively on the flow of photography: the lighting, the portraits, the transitions, the family groupings, and the emotional pacing of the day that requires documentation.
By aligning these two timelines, we ensure:
